It’s been a while since our last event, but we were just hibernating (through Spring and Summer – we do things backwards here).
So, our next event is coming up and we want to see YOU there. We would even venture to say that it’s in your civic interest to be there.
Join us for the next installment of CONVERSACIONES, a series of talks exploring issues responsive to contemporary social and political challenges confronting Latinos in America, under the umbrella of design.
APPS, ACTIVISM AND THE LATINO COMMUNITY // THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH AT 7PM
This discussion will examine the functions of apps in political discourse and public life, their design intentions, development process and reception from the perspectives of app designers, developers and commissioning agents.
The universe of online and mobile apps targeting Latinos falls into the same categories as those targeting the general population: apps for entertainment, news, productivity and communication, with mobile games such as Angry Birds conquering the pack. However, issues specific to the Latino community have contributed to the design and innovation of a new breed of apps that inform users of and/or intervene in the crux of critical civic issues. In an election year where sensitivities over immigration, racial profiling and voter redistricting have captured the national discourse, online and mobile apps have responded with new modes of communication, activism and engagement in ways that have empowered the Latino community.
Our moderator will be the lovely Jazmin Chavez, who was panelist in our last talk. Stay tuned for a list of our speakers.
